The Amazon Echo Dot (third generation) is one of the newer versions of Amazon's less popular speaker, which is part of the popular Echo range of smart home devices. Amazon claims that Dot is the best-selling platform, which is a successful benchmark and an indicator of how useful, and cheap it is.
Now, this Echo Dot update here is version 3 of the smart speaker. The 1st generation model was introduced back in 2016 and, as a rule, the fourth-generation model was developed. But that is known as the Amazon Echo Dot with Clock. Released in 2019, the only thing that really differentiates the Dot we are reviewing here is that, as you might expect, it has a built-in LED clock.
This will be useful to some, but not worth the extra price of others. Which means you shouldn't be tempted by the new model if you don't really need a watch, as the third Echo Dot sans display time we review here is still worth buying - especially if you already have a watch in your home.
There's a lot to like about the Amazon Echo Dot (third generation). It lets you control your smart home with a few commands, is able to make calls almost anywhere in your country, and spreads to music from the world's most popular music services. It may be small, but we can all agree that it is a punch filling certainly.
Despite many improvements to Dot over the years, this 3rd version has still got a few important features. Most notably, there is no 3.5mm auxiliary cable. It's not the easiest speaker of the Amazon Echo though; the Amazon Echo input, adds Alexa smart power to the connected speaker, without being able to play the music itself.
Amazon Echo Dot FAQ
What is Echo Dot used for? Think of the Amazon Echo Dot as your personal assistant. We are not at a stage where our technology can help us physically run our homes, but it can do the rest. So you can ask Dot's voice assistant, Alexa, to answer questions about time, general information, traffic, how the weather will be and everything else that can help your day run a bit.
Thanks to smart home tech connectivity, you can also use your Dot to control other devices you may have in your home. So suppose you have a Philips Hue lightbulb, for example, Dot can also control that. You just need to say "Alexa, turn off the light" - and there are a number of other skills you can use, from playing games to other early morning technology. You can use Alexa now to hit the number lines in the US, Canada, Mexico, and the UK.
Is there an Echo Dot monthly fee?
No, there is no monthly fee. You just need to buy a Dot and have an Amazon account. However, if you are a member of Amazon Prime you will get other benefits, such as access to Amazon Music through your Dot.
Is the Echo Dot worth the money? In our opinion, yes. It packs a lot of great features and powerful technology into a small package. It also makes a financial sense for those who aren't sure how to get out of their homes with smart tech and don't want to take on much gambling.
Does Echo Dot need Alexa?
Yes. Alexa is what makes your Dot smart. Think of him as your smart assistant and brain behind the hardware. You ask her to do things and help you with things throughout the day, starting with “Alexa, what will the weather be like later?” please get in “Alexa, turn on the lights.”
You don't need to do anything extra to get Alexa, as the voice assistant comes built into Amazon's Echo list of smart speakers. (Here's how to change Alexa's voice, too.)

Does Echo Dot need Wi-fi?
Yes, that's right. There's a chance you'll be able to use the Dot as a Bluetooth speaker without Wi-fi, but in order to set it all you still need to connect it to the internet. If you don't have Wifi yet, wait until you do before you buy Dot.
Amazon Echo Dot Design
The 3rd Generals Amazon Echo Dot 3 Slider is easier on the eyes than the other two Echo Dots on Amazon. It offers round edges that help the Dot look a little bit like a hockey puck, and the cloth grille around the outside edge feels modern and stylish at the same time. (Amazon has been taking directions on Google Home Mini, apparently.)
The fabric design helps the Amazon Echo Dot merge with the rest of the Amazon Echo refurbishment, which received a makeover covered in cloth for last year's refurbishment. Because of this, the new Echo Dot comes in colors to match the entire range, too, with Charcoal, Heather Gray and Sandstone shades.
On top of the Echo Dot you'll find four familiar buttons that contain volume up and down, a microphone with Alexa, and a network of four microphones.
Amazon Echo Dot setup with Alexa
Finding a speaker setup is easy - especially if you have one or more Alexa devices already set up in your house. If that's you, all you need to do is enter the Amazon Alexa app and touch the plus icon in the Devices section - the app will do a quick scan of nearby devices and before you know it you'll wake up and work on a smart new speaker.
If you do not have an Alexa or Echo device already installed, you will need to continue the process of downloading the app and signing in to your Amazon account, but it does increase or decrease the process like the one above.
That said, while it has always been easy to set up the Amazon Echo app in the past, we were very happy with the update to the Amazon Alexa app that was revealed a few weeks ago. The duplication function makes it easy to connect devices together in rooms, and add other smart devices to your equipment arriers.
Unfortunately, Alexa itself did not receive the same attention. That's because Amazon has spent so much work on app developers building Alexa capabilities. These skills vary considerably in the quality and function that most of them fall far short of in troll trivia games.
The best skills are likely to be in development right now - but, for now, the ones available don't make the most of the profits, Amazon's pre-built voice system.
If you are looking for a colorful library, Alexa has been active and a worthy guide and if you are planning on using a speaker for tasks such as getting your news and weather or controlling your smart devices, Alexa is more than likely to get the job done.

Aside from the music, the Echo Dot has almost the same size as an Echo full size. You can use it to set timers while you are cooking, ask it to give you a one-minute news cycle while you eat your cereal in the morning, or order or Uber if you have entered your Uber App Alexa information.
If you have a set path that you would like it to do, Alexa can combine multiple commands together - such as, for example, you can turn on your lights, heating and TV - in one short sentence. This is useful when collecting on many smart devices.
And recently we have seen a host of new Alexa voices, along with the new Brief Mode that makes Alexa less likely to respond to your voice (to stop the voice assistant always interrupting conversations) and voice shopping through the Amazon Store.
All of these features are great and make the Amazon Echo family of leading devices in the sector, even if there's a tough competition from Google Assistant.
